Organ Mountains, El Malpais, White Sands New Mexico, a 3-in-1 New Mexico journey!
First: Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument’s highlight are the steep, angular mountains that jut above the Chihuahuan Desert floor to an elevation of 9,000 feet. They are so-called as they resemble the pipes of an organ. You’ll start at the edge of Las Cruces in a neighborhood of classic southwestern houses and pedal through expansive BLM land with full-on, spectacular views uphill to Dripping Springs natural area.
Secondly, Scenic Highway 117 through El Malpais National Monument will captivate you while passing black lava on one side and rows of giant sandstone bluffs on the other. There’s a quick stop to see majestic La Ventana Arch. It’s easy to become absorbed into the rhythm of this ever-changing landscape from the start on through “The Narrows”, gazing up at the natural patterns of the cliff faces.
The sand of White Sands National Park, in the third section, is not the same sand we’re all used to: rather than silica it’s almost pure gypsum! This naturally clear crystal collects in immense white dunes here, contrasting blue skies and desert foliage, leaving memorable impressions. 60 minutes with an inspiring soundtrack.
