“The Technicolor Highway” is what people started calling Utah’s State Route 12 because it has such a vibrant, dramatic landscape to explore! An All-American Road, it passes through the heart of the expansive Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Ready to ride?
We’ll start by going through the unforgettable rock spires and chimneys of Kodachrome Basin State Park near Cannonville.
Venturing back on Highway 12 northeast toward the town of Escalante, we pass through a wide valley with high, rocky cliffs under striking desert skies.
The next “stair” starts on a high plateau, which leads down around hairpin turns into beautiful, mineral-streaked Calf Creek canyon. Then it goes back up a strenuous hill-climb to a section known infamously as “The Hogback” for its sheer drops on either side. The final colorful leg is near Panguitch, passing under the iconic arches of Red Canyon in the Dixie National Forest.
This scenic indoor cycling video is one hour long with upbeat music, maps of the routes and more. Like it? Try also #86: Bryce Canyon National park and Hike-O-Vision Peekaboo Loop, on Bike-O-Vision.com!
