Two southern California hillclimbs to ride in their best season! Rich from recent rains and showing signs of early spring, these two well-known scenic byways east of Los Angeles will surprise you with their diverse and rugged beauty.
Starting in the manicured community of Palm Desert (one of the Palm Springs desert cities) under palms, cacti and bougainvillea hedges you start a gradual ascent into the San Jacinto Mountains. From the town of Banning, you’ll quickly gain the heights over boulder-and-chaparral-covered scenes worthy of the silver screen. Higher elevations reveal fantastic alpine views to the artsy town of Idyllwild.
The next scenic route near San Bernardino begins up a beautiful green valley, though this contrasts starkly with the road ahead: a 6-to-7,000 foot serpentine mountain traverse worthy of the name “Rim of the World”. After threading up past precipitous villages and ski resorts you’ll see for yourself, cycling over the pass, catching hair-raising panoramas around each corner. The last part of your ride is around gorgeous Big Bear Lake. 76 minutes.
