In the very center of Italy on Tuscany's southeastern border rests the beautiful region of Umbria, a land of cultured farmland, classic hilltop villages and the beautiful Apennine mountains. You'll start with a long, straight stretch through olive groves bordered by the ever-present red poppies to get a good pace going. Then you'll cycle steadily up through grassy, rolling hills from highly acclaimed Orvieto to San Lorenzo Tre, with its stone-brick walls and green-shuttered buildings. This is classic Italian scenery, rich in history (St. Francis of Assisi lived here for example) and similar to Tuscany in aesthetic appeal yet with its own unique style of landscape and architecture. In fact our journey also includes two rides to the hilltop towns of Chianciano and Montepulciano which are just over the border in Tuscany. 82 enjoyable minutes through Italy!
